Damien  is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust where he has worked since 1994.  He trained in General Practice in Greater Manchester before moving back into hospital medicine specialising in gastroenterology at South Manchester University Hospital. From there he was appointed to a registrar post in the internationally renowned Gastroenterology Unit, The General Infirmary at Leeds, under the tutelage of Professor Anthony Axon, where he subsequently became a research registrar looking at Helicobacter pylori and gastroduodenal disease culminating in being awarded an MD. In 1993 he was appointed Senior Registrar and worked with Dr Adrian Manning (international expert in irritable bowel syndrome) at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The following year Damien was delighted to return to Blackburn as a consultant. He is an Honorary Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Central Lancashire and Director of Medical Undergraduate Education at ELHT. In 2008 he received an NHS Bronze Award for his contribution to the National Health Service. In 2019 Damien was awarded the William Cullen Prize for Excellence in Teaching or Service Innovation by the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in recognition of his work in postgraduate and undergraduate medical education and medical handover. In 2023, the School of Medicine, UCLan created the Lynch Award for the graduating medical student with the best overall clinical examination [OSCE] performance. Awarded annually, it is in recognition of his "longstanding and very valued commitment to the MBBS programme". He has also been Associate Medical Director, Divisional Director for Medicine at ELHT and Programme Director for Gastroenterology Training in the Northwest.
